The world is rich in beauty

Having recently gotten my Texas state ID (due to not driving, I'd lived here several years without one), I can now buy whiskey, and my beer needs are no longer dependent on a few friendly convenience store clerks who wouldn't hassle me about my Pennsylvania ID. Now it's a springtime of liquor, with whiskey-buying opportunities blooming like flowers where there had only been grey winter before.

So, do you still not drive? My son has a license but does not drive because he has no car, and we didn't want to pay for insurance when he would be living away from us most of the time in a very walkable community in which it is difficult to find a place to park a car. (I believe you lived there too for a while.) You see, I'm looking for support that he is not the only person in the world his age who doesn't drive.

Yep, that's me too! I have a license but no car. I've never owned one. With insurance costs, the difficulty of parking, occasional repair hassles, the cost of gas, and accident risk, I hope to live the no-car walking-everywhere simple life for as long as possible.

I'm 21, and my parents wish I were more enthusiastic about driving than I am. Most of the year, I'm in Chicago, which has decent public transit.

I'm pretty much in Mary's son's situation, and I find it fine. I actually find driving a little scary.

You like whiskey? Does this include the Scotch varieties?

I am with Neil on the driving business -- expensive, unpleasant, and dangerous (with me behind the wheels, at least).

However, whiskey is bleeetch!

I find it scary too, Julian.

Oh yeah, Kaitlin. Big fan of scotch. Especially the peaty Islay stuff. Last year I found a mispriced ($27, usually ~$45) bottle of Laphroaig 10 year -- basically, the smokiest scotch there is -- and really enjoyed it.

Sure you've had the right whiskeys, Panda? Jameson, Bushmills, Maker's Mark? Jameson was the first hard liquor I drank, and I enjoyed it from the first sip. It has a really easy-to-appreciate caramel/vanilla sort of flavor. There's a lot of rough nasty stuff out there, though.

Isle of Jura. It's got the best bottle shape.
