I go everywhere and give talks

Thanks to the generosity of the National University of Singapore, I've got a semester of leave with which to travel the USA giving talks and a nice travel grant to pay for it. So I'm going to travel the country giving talks and meet all the philosophers I can!

I've always wondered how some philosophy professors can get so many talks, like a band on tour. I'm assuming you didn't apply to most of these. Were you invited, or did you just email a swath of departments with your availability?

Mostly I email friends and acquaintances at various universities and ask if they'd like me to come around. Other times people suggest to me that I contact department heads and such. Sometimes if I'm going to be in the area, I email heads of local departments and ask them if they'd like me to give a talk. It helps that I can pay my way, though a few departments have been really nice about paying for my accommodations and giving me honoraria that I didn't ask for.

You should come to Notre Dame!

Would've loved to, Liz! Maybe next time I do this, which may be as soon as Spring 2013.
