Free Preschool!
I went to Raintree Montessori preschool in Lawrence, Kansas. The adults were very nice to me, and there was a farm nearby where kids could go and feed carrots to the horse. Even if other kids won't get to experience similarly idyllic settings, I'd like to make free preschool available to them. (I also think it's a smart way for Democrats to appeal to working families.) More Ezra's blog.

Well said, Neil, though I would have mentioned calendar-making and the punitive qualities of one-person tables. One day, you and I should make a pilgrimage to Raintree. We could make a huge donation in Mom's name, but maybe that's putting the carrots before the horse.
This is definitely a valuable idea. I know here in Pennsylvania Ed Rendell made full-day kindergarten a part of his platform in 2002. I stayed at home with my daughter until she was 2 and a half, then put her into day care/preschool. And while it was tough at the beginning, and it takes some time getting used to the idea that there are other people with a strong influence on your child, I wouldn't trade it for anything. The ability to spend time with her own age group and learn social and vocabulary skills has been invaluable, and you just can't get that staying at home all the time.
